Silver Spring, MD Homes For Sale

With great homes for sale and countless amenities, Silver Spring is a suburban utopia. If that seems like a convenient statement, consider this—the city was chronicled by PBS for a story on the quintessential suburban experience in “Silver Spring, Story of an American Suburb.” Yet, this isn’t a prototypical inland empire of cookie cutter homes and postage stamp lawns. Indeed, it is much more—a vibrant and diverse community combining a large urban downtown environment with numerous attractive neighborhoods, each with their own characteristics.

Like so much of Washington Metro, Silver Spring has a historical backstory, dating all the way back to early colonial settlers and named for a local spring with mica in the water—giving the appearance of glittering silver. The arrival of the B&O Railroad in the 1870s led to a further residential expansion when an enterprising land developer purchased a massive farm and divided it into five and 10-acre lots, along with homes for sale. Some of these grand old properties still exist—Colonials and Victorians, some of which include private stables with plenty of land to ride on. More About the Silver Spring, MD Real Estate Market

As you might expect, historic houses make up a relatively small percentage of all homes for sale in Silver Spring. Yet with hundreds of active listings, that sliver is still significant. Overall, the market is quite varied, with real estate development that has continued right up to the present. About one-third of the listings are condos for sale and that includes everything from luxury high-rises along urban corridors to multilevel upscale townhouses. Downtown Silver Spring has been going through a resurgent growth spurt in recent years, and was recently reported on in the New York Times.

Silver Spring single-family homes for sale start in the low six-figures and climb to over $2 million. You’ll find all the usual architectural styles, from modest Ramblers and cottages, to Cape Cods, Tudors and some contemporary designs. It is the top end that gets the most attention, of course, with a large number of oversized custom homes for sale on huge lots with beautifully manicured front lawns.

What else does Silver Spring have to offer? How about a restored Art Deco movie house sponsored by the American Film Institute, equestrian facilities, golf, beautiful parks, a Whole Foods and trader Joe’s and great bars and restaurants? And of course, excellent homes for sale. It’s all part of a great American suburban story.
