Shirlington Homes For Sale, Arlington VA

The community of Shirlington in South Arlington, near to the Alexandria border, is a great example of how much a place can evolve over a period of time. Once best-known for its World War II era shopping mall, the neighborhood has now transformed into Arlington’s Arts & Entertainment District. It also offers modern luxury condos for sale.

Shirlington came into prominence around 1944 when the Shirlington Shopping Center opened. It was first mall experience in the DC region and one of the first in the entire nation. The name comes from a combination of Shirley Highway (I-395) and Arlington. Around the same time, next-door Fairlington was emerging as the largest WWII garden apartment community financed by the federal government for wartime workers. From that point forward, the two communities became intertwined in the Washington Metro public consciousness.

As the decades rolled past, the shopping center—once a formidable retail experience—began showing its age and diminishing in relevance. But it was redeveloped in the 1980s as the Village at Shirlington, and went through a subsequent major renovation in 2005.

Today, Shirlington is a vibrant live, work and play experience with dozens of bars, restaurants and coffee houses, plus upscale shops galore. There’s movies at AMC Lowe’s Shirlington 7, the annual Shirlington Oktoberfest and the Signature Theatre with live performances including major Broadway musicals.

As for residential options, there’s condos, lofts, townhouses, apartments and even single-family homes for sale. Prices typically start in the low-to-mid six figure range and climb to the high six figures. And if you ever feel the need to get away from all the excellent retail and dining, you can hop over to Old Town Alexandria or head north to the hopping Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor.
