Logan Circle Through the Ages

Before Logan Circle had a name or any homes, it was just rural land. But when the District was formed, the area, like the large swaths of land throughout the planned city, was included in a map drawn by architect Pierre L’Enfant. Included in the 1792 rendering was a neatly organized grid of blocks, east-west and north-south streets, public spaces and wider avenues running diagonally through the region.

Two of those grand avenues, Vermont and Rhode Island, intersected a public gathering place that resembled a squared-off triangle. By the mid-1800s that triangle was developed as Iowa Circle, later to be renamed Logan Circle. It wasn’t until the end of the Civil War that residential development began to take shape in a meaningful way. The earliest row houses were constructed during the late 1860s and the 1870s and presented the Federal style with flat roofs and not much adornment. In the decades that followed, designs became much more ornate with Victorian, Second Empire, Romanesque, Beaux Arts, Neoclassical and Mediterranean styles.

While the major building boom was complete by the 1930s, blocks continued to be filled in with Art Deco, International-style and more contemporary forms. The modern era brought a level of redevelopment with older buildings making way for newer ones. Bars and restaurants that are super close to Q14 Le Diplomate, Estadio, Birch and Barley, Commissary, the pig, ChurchKey, JINYA, Pappe, Radiator, Etto, Logan Tavern, Drafting Table and many others.
