All that said, this is city that is just a little dog-crazy. In fact, there are about 20 different off-leash dog parks in Alexandria—more than in most other Washington Metro territories. While listing them all would take forever, a sampling includes Ben Brenman, Beatley Library, Grist Mill, Founders Park, Chinquapin Park, the Dog Run Park at Carlyle, Braddock Road, Beauregard Street, Simpson Stadium and many others. Most of the city’s off-leash dog parks are fenced but not all, so it’s always good to check first.

There’s also some worthy shelters and adoption agencies for those interesting in rescuing a pet, including Animal Welfare League of Alexandria, Dog World Rescue, the SPCA and the Alexandria Animal Shelter. You can even rescue birds from Virginia Bird Rescue and the Rescue Me Mission. There’s also plenty of veterinarians and animal hospitals, as well as two big box pet stores—Petco and Pet Smart, each of which host adoption services.
