Pentagon City Homes For Sale, Arlington VA
Pentagon City is an urbanized neighborhood in the southernmost reaches of Arlington, Virginia, close to the Alexandria border. It’s very close to the Potomac River and named after the Pentagon—the five-sided headquarters of the United States Department of Defense. As such, the community is a popular real estate market for those working in government and related industries. But it’s a lot more than just that.
This is a community that is markedly different from many of its historic neighbors. It was largely undeveloped land prior to the construction of the Pentagon complex in the early 1940s. For the next 10 years, further construction in the area tended to be industrial and commercial usage, including a General Electric manufacturing plant. But that all changed in the 1960s when some high-rise apartment buildings began cropping up. That prompted a continuing trend of apartments, condos and retail outlets. The upscale Fashion Center at Pentagon City, also referred to as Pentagon Mall, was delivered in 1989 with approximately 170 retailers and restaurants. Other popular complexes include Pentagon Row with stores, dining and luxury residences.

The Pentagon itself is at the far northern end of the community, with the I-395 bisecting that area. Crystal City lies to the east of Pentagon City, while neighborhoods like Aurora Hills, Addison Heights and Virginia Highlands are to the south, southwest and the west. Also worth noting is Alexandria’s new Potomac Yard community, south of Crystal City.
While residential properties in the heart of Pentagon City are almost exclusively condos and townhouses for sale, there are also a number of detached single-family homes in surrounding neighborhoods such as Aurora Hills, etc. These nearby suburbs are often included in Pentagon City listings due to their very close proximity. Real estate prices have a fairly wide range, from the low six figures for a one-bedroom condo all the way up to a million dollars or more for a house or very large penthouse.
Residents of Pentagon City enjoy plenty of amenities. There’s the aforementioned dining and retail, plus a Whole Foods Market and a Harris Teeter. Commuting is a snap via the Pentagon City and Crystal City Metro stations, or the I-395. Plus, the 14th Street Bridge leads across the river to Washington, DC, while the Ronald Reagan International Airport is right next-door. And lest this all seems overly urbanized, there’s also abundant green spaces in the area, including the large Virginia Highlands Park on the southern border of Pentagon City.
