Penrose dates back to early colonial land grants in the 1700s, and was later platted for residential development in 1882 by Henry Louis Holmes and William H. Butler, both leaders in the African American community in the DC area. At that time, the neighborhood was still known as Central Arlington. The arrival of a local streetcar line helped boost the construction of homes for sale in the early 1900s. Home building continued up to the early 1940s, and by that time, also included a number of brick Colonial Revival-style apartment buildings. Those buildings, originally intended to house World War II workers, have largely converted to condos for sale in the modern era.
Original architectural styles in Penrose include Queen Anne and other Victorian subsets, original Craftsman bungalows, mid-century Ramblers, duplexes and brick cottages, and more recent upscale construction from Arts & Crafts homes to luxury townhouses. Real Estate prices here tend to have a fairly wide range, from the low six figures to over a million dollars.
The Columbia Pike Corridor in general suffered a slow decline during the 1970s and 1980s, before beginning a lengthy revitalization process that is still ongoing. Plans for a new electric streetcar line eventually fell through, but that hasn’t kept county and local business leaders from encouraging new retail, restaurants, commercial development and community involvement.
Today, Penrose enjoys historic district status and has seen a robust growth in property values. Among the amenities is the popular Alamo Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse, housed in a historic theater that is over 70 years old. Locals also enjoy the proximity to restaurants and retail along Wilson and Clarendon Boulevards to the north, as well as in communities such as Pentagon City and Crystal City to the south.
