More About the Neighborhood
The Palisades is an elongated sliver of land, stretching from Georgetown all the way north to Potomac Heights which is close to the Maryland border. Some regard the aforementioned Foxhall subdivisions to the south as their own neighborhoods and others consider them part of the Palisades.

The area used to be farmland, with the historic Chesapeake & Ohio Canal running parallel to the Potomac River. The Palisades transitioned into a summer community in the late 1800s. The Great Falls Electric Railroad ran through the neighborhood for a period of time. Also, the popular International Athletic Park and Amusement Company with its bicycle track and dance hall was in operation during the early part of the 20th century.
The Palisades Today
Today, historic remnants of the past live on in the Palisades, preserved and maintained by the National Parks Service. Joggers and bicyclists can venture along the old canal path, and Fletcher’s Cove Boathouse is a great place to rent rowboats or kayaks and go fishing.
