In 1711, Thomas Addison built a hilltop home overlooking the Potomac and named it Oxon Manor. The mansion stood for over three centuries before burning down in 1927. More About the Oxon Hill Real Estate Market
Residential subdividing began gradually in the early 1900s, consisting primarily of single-family homes for sale. In the early 1940s however, some garden apartment structures were built as housing for wartime workers. Those would eventually be converted to condos for sale in the modern era.
The post-war baby boom kicked off a new spike in construction which mostly tapered off by the 1980s. There are exceptions, however, such as new four-story luxury row house-style townhomes listing in the high six figures, as well as some recent custom homes for sale with competitive contractor pricing.
It should be noted, however, that apart from a relatively small number of high-end properties, the majority of homes for sale in Oxon Hill tend to be found in a range from $100,000 to $350,000. This includes both detached single-family structures and condos for sale.
As for architecture, there’s Colonial, Craftsman, Rambler, Split-level and even some angular contemporary designs. Why are prices so low in this riverside community? It’s chiefly due to the real estate downturn that affected Prince George’s County beginning around 2008. The result has been a buyers’ market, which ultimately fed a resurgent climb in values.
This town is big on sports and recreation. The Oxon Hill Rec Center has a private swim club, and there’s also Henson Golf Course, Glassmanor Community Center with a gymnasium, basketball, tennis and game room. You can add the Tucker Road Athletic Complex with an indoor ice rink, and North Barnaby Community Splash Park with a 25-meter swimming pool and a mind-boggling array of other water features.
And finally, there’s Oxon Cove Farm—a historic former plantation which is now a working farm run by the National Park Service with animals, crops, and hiking and bicycling along a lovely stream.
