The History of the Neighborhood
NoMa wasn’t always known by its current name. The area dates back to the 1800s when it was largely home to the Irish immigrant working class, including a community once known as Swampoodle. But the construction of Union Station around 1907 ushered in sweeping changes—many of the old row houses were razed and commercial development took over. New construction included the Uline Arena, later renamed the Washington Coliseum (site of the first Beatles concert in the U.S.).
By the 1970s and 1980s, urban blight had set in. But a new wave of commercial revitalization eventually followed, including the establishment of the XM Satellite Radio headquarters. By 2007, the City Council gave an extra boost with the creation of the NoMa Business Improvement District.
