The History of Mount Vernon Square
This land that makes up Mount Vernon Square dates back to early settler days. It was subsequently part of Pierre L’Enfant’s original District planning, as one of several public reservations in the Federal City. It was referred to as Northern Liberties at the time and officially renamed in 1845.
Early residential and commercial development keyed on apartment buildings, hotels, early cooperatives, row houses and businesses. But in more recent years, the city razed dilapidated structures and began redeveloping with modern high-rises. This is an area where you’ll find a wide blend of styles, from original architecture to new luxury condos for sale, including mixed-use developments. In some cases, you’ll find new towers literally perched on top of old historic buildings.
