The Gateway to Georgetown

The area of North Georgetown that Montrose Walk is located in is sometimes referred to as the Gateway to Georgetown. The condominiums are three short blocks from Wisconsin Avenue which is the main artery into the Georgetown area. The residences are also tucked into a very quiet area with multiple greenspaces all around. Those not only include Montrose Park, Children’s Park and Dumbarton Oaks Park to the northeast, but Tudor Place and the small Book Hill Park as well. Also next-door is the Dumbarton Oaks Museum and the historic Dumbarton Oaks Estate, dating back to 1801.  In addition, the Georgetown Neighborhood Library which was established by an act of Congress in 1934 is on R Street, just a couple blocks from the condos.

But for all the serene bookish charm of the immediate surroundings, Wisconsin Avenue has plenty of amenities to offer, including eateries like Café Divan, Casbah Café, Shanghai Lounge, Patisserie Poupon, Bistrot Lepic & Wine Bar. There are also several galleries within walking distance as well as the Georgetown Shops, a Safeway, antique stores, coffeehouses and a smorgasbord of indie businesses. Georgetown and its Waterfront

While Montrose Walk might be tucked into a part of Georgetown with a quiet neighborhood feel, the main part of Georgetown’s famous shopping and restaurant district is less than a mile to the west. Many of the top boutique clothing stores lie along Wisconsin Avenue and its cross street M Street NW. And while popular eateries are littered throughout Georgetown, there is an added concentration on these same two streets as well as along the Potomac River. Fiola Mare, Farmers Fishers Bakers and Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place are well known for their views of the river.

Georgetown, of course, is celebrated for top dining options. Just a handful of well-regarded restaurants would include Wildfire, Tony and Luigi’s, Bourbon Steak, Blue Corn Harvest Bar and Grill, Fish City Grill, pizzeria Paradiso, 600 Degrees Pizzeria, Fiola Mare, Filomena Ristorante, Leopold’s Kafe Restaurant, Café Milano and the down-to-earth Luke’s Lobster.

There’s more to do than shop and eat however! Those who enjoy hiking and bicycling have a couple of superb routes to explore. The old C&O Canal is managed by the National Parks Service. The canal was in operation from the mid-1800s to 1924 and featured a series of locks from Virginia to Maryland through which wooden boats would pass. The old tow paths are a wonderful place to stroll and gaze at remnants from a time gone by. Also, Capital Crescent Trail runs from Georgetown to Silver Spring.

The Georgetown Waterfront Park is a huge attraction as well. Completed in 2011, the national park is the culmination of decades of effort. With a promenade, grassy areas, fountain, rain gardens and terraced levels leading down to the Potomac River, the 10-acre strip is a wonderful place to stroll, sit and relax. For those who enjoy boating, there’s the Key Bridge Boathouse and the Washington Canoe Club.

In other words, there’s lots to do and see in Georgetown. The neighborhood’s close proximity to Downtown DC, the National Mall, the White House and Capitol Hill also makes it’s a favorite neighborhood for those seeking a next-door commute to work.
