The two localities are not literally next-door to one another. In fact, the more urbanized communities of Clarendon and Courthouse act as a fascinating and vibrant buffer zone, right between the two Lyons.

There’s an interesting reason for all this. Once upon a time, this entire area was farmland. But during the early 1900s, an influential publisher, lawyer, politician and social reformer named Frank Lyon entered the picture. Lyon had been involved in the clean-up efforts in the waterfront Rosslyn neighborhood—a place known for lawlessness and brothels. Determined to make a positive impact in neighboring areas, Lyon became involved in the planning and development of Clarendon, and subsequently began snapping up land to the north and to the south.

Those land purchases led to Lyon Park, with residential development beginning around 1919. Four years later he initiated Lyon Village. Homes for sale in this neighborhood tended to be larger and more expensive. Construction was mostly complete by the very early 1940s, with some exceptions.

This storybook historic neighborhood is bound by Lee Highway to the north and Wilson Boulevard to the south. And yes, the lines of delineation can be very blurry when it comes to Lyon Village/Clarendon-Courthouse borders.

Real estate properties in Lyon Village tend toward old, grand architecture with Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, Tudor and even some Spanish/Mediterranean styles. Despite all the history there has been a more recent trend toward teardowns or substantial remodels. Nonetheless, the design principles have largely remained true to old traditions, i.e. “Custom Craftsman”, etc.

There are also some 1940s-era brick garden style apartment buildings around the edges of the village that have more recently converted to condos for sale, as well as newer condo and townhouse developments also associated with Clarendon-Courthouse.

Prices in Lyon Village don’t come cheap, typically starting around a million bucks and climbing to over $2 million. But while the sticker shock is obvious and the active inventory is low, these residences offer the opportunity to live in the heart of Arlington’s trendiest area.

The super popular Rosslyn-Ballston corridor boasts an array of bars, top restaurants, boutique retailers, upscale malls and entertainment. Residents of Lyon Village can easily venture down to Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Market Common, the Clarendon Metro and the Courthouse Metro stations. On the north side of the neighborhood is the eclectic Shops at Lee Heights.
