Lorton, VA Homes For Sale

With a wide range of homes for sale, ranging from multimillion dollar waterfront mansions to entry-level condos, Lorton holds a wealth of possibilities for prospective real estate buyers. It is also a community with an unusually large percentage of undeveloped green space. Residents are hoping that doesn’t change, as those areas are home to all manner of wildlife, including the American bald eagle.

Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, Lorton is a long oddly-shaped strip of land encompassing 12.5 square miles and home to some 30,000 residents. The southeastern portion sticks out into the Potomac River, surrounded by Belmont Bay, Occoquan Bay, Gunston Cove and Pohick Bay. The Occoquan River tributary extends up along the entire southwestern border of town. And while many of the more expensive homes for sale are located by the water, there are even more properties, including condos for sale, in inland neighborhoods.

The community dates back to colonial days with the name coming from the Lorton Valley Post Office which opened for business in 1875. You can still find some old homes for sale, such as an old Victorian farmhouse with three bedrooms on seven acres of land that recently listed in “as is” condition for $1.7 million. That means you’ll have to spend a whole lot of money to fix the place up. Or, you could plunk down an extra million on a huge custom waterfront mansion with a dock and 18 acres of pristine land. More About the Lorton, VA Real Estate Market

Condos for sale start around $200,000 and climb steadily, with an emphasis on townhouses, including brand new construction luxury four-bedroom multistory residences listing in the $600,000 range. As for detached single-family homes for sale, there is a true diversity of choices, eras and styles. And while many sit on very large lots, that is not necessarily an indicator of the type of house or cost—there are cottages on huge lots and large custom homes on small lots—and vice-versa!

Suffice to say you have choices in Lorton, a community steeped in history with an increasing number of new homes and condos for sale. Prices generally top out around $6 million for some incredibly palatial homes. As mentioned previously, the hope is that increased development doesn’t encroach too much into the town’s natural splendor. Parks and wetlands include Pohick Bay and Potomac Shoreline Regional Parks, Mason Neck State Park, and the Meadowland Special Recreation Area.
