LeDroit Park Real Estate, Washington DC
Washington, DC by its very nature abounds with historical details that often help shape its neighborhoods in unique ways. LeDroit Park is a case in point—one of the older communities in the District and with an interesting story. It is also a place where you’ll find amazing homes for sale, including some of the most architecturally striking row houses in the region. For DC, that is saying quite a lot. In 1873, Amzi L. Barber, a wealthy white businessman known as the “Asphalt King” and a trustee at the all-black Howard University, built a gated community of homes for sale adjacent the university. At issue was Barber’s decision to bar non-whites. Adding insult was the fact that numerous white professors happily moved in. The student body didn’t appreciate the hypocrisy and in 1888, tore down the gates. The original entryway with its wrought-iron “1873” still stands, however—a remainder of the past.
LeDroit Park became home to numerous prominent black figures over time, including civil rights activist Mary Church Terrell, jazz great Duke Ellington and Nobel winner Ralph Bunche. Today, preservationists are fighting to keep the stories alive as new buyers scoop up old properties. One such effort is the restoration of the historic Howard Theatre—the first full-scale venue built for black performers and audiences.
