A Unique History
LeDroit Park was developed in 1873 as a gated all-white community by Amzi L. Barber, a wealthy white businessman and a trustee at Howard University. The great irony was that the university was an all-black school. The hypocrisy didn’t sit well with the student body, and by 1888 the gates had been torn down. LeDroit Park subsequently became an integrated community, including black icons such as Duke Ellington and civil rights leader March Church Terrell. Today, the front gate remains standing as an enduring reminder of the positive power of change.
The community is also known for its row houses designed by James McGill. Originally, there were 64 of these structures built in a compressed four-year period. Each was unique, displaying either Gothic, Second Empire, Italianate or Victorian characteristics. Of the original buildings, 50 remain standing.
