Hyattsville, MD Homes For Sale

Located along the historic Route 1 Corridor in Maryland is Hyattsville—one of four communities that make up the Gateway Arts District. This town of about 18,000 residents is also well known for its affordable older homes for sale, including a number of original Sears Roebuck “Craftsman-style” bungalows. But a word of moderation for aficionados of these funky porch-front houses—many have already been snapped up.

Hyattsville dates back to early tobacco plantations and was originally known as Beale Town. It eventually became the intersection of the Washington and Baltimore Turnpike and in 1835, the B&O Railroad arrived. A decade later, a businessman with the last name of “Hyatt” opened a general store and decided to name the town after himself.

Homes for sale run the gamut, from old Colonial and Victorian structures to new custom built affairs. You’ll also find Ramblers, Capes and Split-levels, and of course, the Sears catalogue homes that were shipped in kit form, by rail. There’s also a fair number of condos for sale, including artists’ lofts and retro-looking row house-style townhomes. All-in-all, prices start around $100,000 and rarely rise above $700,000. More About the Hyattsville Real Estate Market

The Gateway Arts District came about during the late 1990s as an answer to creative types who were being priced out of their arts lofts in Washington, DC. This cooperative district also includes Mount Rainer, Brentwood and North Brentwood. The presence of the creative community has helped stimulate economic growth along the corridor.

With its eclectic array of galleries, cafes and other local businesses, Hyattsville is a community on the rise. There’s still a large inventory of competitively priced homes and condos for sale as well, including some short sales and foreclosures. This is due in large part to the residual effect of the real estate downturn in Prince George’s County which began nearly a decade ago.

Since 2012, however, Hyattsville real estate values have been on the climb again. Hyattsville is a vibrant and diverse community, with lovely parks around its perimeters, including Anacostia River Park, Magruder Park, and Northwest Branch Park. Its proximity to the DC border and strong local economic initiatives are helping to make Hyattsville, MD real estate for sale a highly desirable location for new home buyers who crave something a little more fun and funky than the suburbs.
