Now, move all the way ahead to 1940 when President Franklin Roosevelt’s Defense Homes Corporation began building the massive garden apartment community of Fairlington as a response for housing for the rapidly expanding federal wartime workforce. During the 1940s, the 3,439 garden courtyard homes comprised the largest apartment complex in the United States.
But in the 1970s, the entire community was renovated and converted to condos for sale and renamed as they are today (Arbor, Glen, etc).
