Eckington History and Neighborhood Information
The community dates all the way back to the Eckington estate in the early 1800s. The area was agrarian in nature until the B&O Railroad arrived. That led first to industrial development, followed by residential construction in the early 1900s. The aforementioned row houses were a major part of that trend, along with apartment buildings and detached single-family homes.
By the 1920s, the more ornate Victorian row house styles were giving way to somewhat plainer front porch variations, often with Mansard roofs.
This is a community that went through a period of urban decline before experiencing its more recent revitalization. Local businesses include Harris Teeter and Union Market, with new mixed-use developments such as Eckington Yards which will feature retail, cafes and residences.
Real Estate in Eckington
While row houses make up much of the local real estate market, there are also some notable antique apartment buildings that have been renovated and restored as condominiums. Those include a 1913 Beaux Arts structure known as 219 Vista (or The Vista); a 1926 Art Deco building called The Mint; and a 1929 monolithic structure named The Metropolitan that stood vacant for decades before being reborn as luxury condos for sale.
