A Footnote about the Circle
The circle park itself is a favorite gathering spot for locals, a place to drink coffee, walk the dog or just people watch. At the epicenter is the Dupont Circle Fountain—aka the Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont Memorial Fountain. A bronze statue of the admiral was originally erected in 1884. But the sculptor was subsequently sent to a lunatic asylum in New York City for the “effects of excessive drink.” The Dupont family ultimately replaced the statue with a fountain.
Where is Dupont Circle?
Dupont Circle is bordered roughly by Florida Avenue NW to the north, 16th Street NW to the east, M Street NW to the south and 22nd Street NW to the west. A large portion of this urban community is a historic district. Surrounding neighborhoods include Adams Morgan to the north, Logan Circle to the east, Downtown DC to the south (part of Dupont Circle extends into Downtown) and Georgetown to the west.
Real Estate at a Glance in Dupont Circle
Antique row houses form a major portion of the Dupont real estate market. Styles include Queen Anne, Richardsonian Romanesque and Beaux Arts, with lots of front bays and spires. The community was once known for its grand detached single-family homes, often in the Second Empire style. While many have been demolished over the years, there are still some remaining examples along the major avenues. You'll also find some newer buildings as well.
Condos for sale and townhouses are the most predominant properties available but there are also some single-family residences. But be prepared for some sticker shock!
Things to Do in Dupont Circle
There are art galleries, boutique retail, coffeehouses and a year-round farmers market. But it’s the bars and restaurants that are the neighborhood’s liveliest nighttime calling card. Among the places to hang out are the Bar Dupont and Dupont Café inside the Dupont Circle Hotel, Black Cat, Hank’s Oyster Bar, Floriana, Buffalo Billiards, James Hoban’s Irish Bar & Restaurant, Obelisk, Komi, St. Arnold’s Mussel Bar, the Eighteenth Street Lounge and plenty more.
