Donaldson Run Homes For Sale, Arlington, VA
Donaldson Run is both a stream and a neighborhood in Arlington, Virginia. The community is home to Marymount University, and that’s also where the quaint waterway begins, winding through wooded areas and emptying into the Potomac River. This is also a place where you’ll find a variety of single-family homes for sale from old to new, typically starting around $650,000 and topping out at around $2 million.
This upscale neighborhood is bordered by the Washington Golf and Country Club, Bellevue Forest and the Potomac Overlook Regional Park, all of which lie along the northern side. Lee Highway and Old Dominion Drive are to the south. With gently hilly terrain and all that greenspace, it’s not hard to imagine this as what it once was—verdant farmland first settled by James Donaldson in the 1700s and tended by his progeny for many generations thereafter.

There’s still a few true antiques here, but widespread platting and development didn’t commence until the early 1930s, continuing at a fairly steady pace until around 1960. After a lull of a couple decades, a new wave of construction began and it has continued until the present in the form of teardowns and other major renovation projects. The result is a smorgasbord of styles—with rambling Victorians, stately Colonials, Capes, Tudors, midcentury contemporary designs and new custom Craftsman and Arts & Crafts homes.
In addition to the Potomac Overlook, there’s also the large Zachary Taylor Park and the smaller Lee Heights Park (plus its eponymous subdivision). The streets are windy and lined with mature trees, and the overall feel is of a residential Shangri-La. Donaldson Run also enjoys an active civic association that promotes community betterment. Proposed projects include a farmers market, as well as an expansion of the Stratford Middle School. Also in the neighborhood is the popular Taylor Elementary School.
