Clara Barton Condos for Sale | Penn Quarter

Located at 616 E Street NW, Washington, DC 20004

One of the most interesting (not to mention luxurious) condominiums in Washington, DC, is the Clara Barton. Located in the popular Penn Quarter neighborhood, the Clara Barton is part of a tandem adaptive reuse project and is connected to a sister building known as The Layfayette. The twin structures began as the historic Central Armature Building built in 1926. The historic portion now serves as a frontispiece, with the conjoined 12-story high-rises looming behind.

More About Penn Quarter

Residents at the Clara Barton are living in a very old part of the city, in an area sometimes referred to as “Old Downtown.” While the name Penn Quarter is a more recent label, the area itself which encompasses a large eastern portion of Downtown north of Pennsylvania Avenue including Chinatown, dates back to the origins of the city. The acreage saw significant development from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s. One of the oldest surviving buildings is Ford’s Theatre, completed in 1863 and known as the place where President Lincoln was assassinated. The historic theatre is still open today, not only for tours but also as a working performing arts venue.

This part of the city was famous for its entertainment district back in the day. Streetcars would take citizens from one spot to the next. Many of the early cinema houses are now gone, including the Metropolitan Theater, Lowe’s Palace Theater, Crandall’s Joy Theater and the Empress Theater. Another long lost architectural treasure is the Raleigh Hotel, a massive Beaux Arts masterpiece built in 1893.

Despite the loss of numerous older structures, there are still many that have survived the tests of time, often being incorporated into new developments. Such is the case with the Clara Barton and The Lafayette, which as mentioned earlier, sprang from the historic Central Armature Building. But a concerted redevelopment and revitalization program that began in the 1990s has also included the construction of numerous new luxury buildings, including condominiums, hotels, office buildings, retail, restaurants and entertainment. Capital One Arena was built in 1997, first named the MCI Center and later Verizon Center. Regardless of the changing of names, it remains home to multiple prestigious sports franchises, including the NBA’s Washington Wizards and the Washington Capitals of the NHL. The arena is very transit friendly, sitting right on top of the Gallery Place-Chinatown Metro Station!

Transit Options in Penn Quarter

Penn Quarter is ideally situated for those working in the nation’s capital, with the White House, the United States Capitol Building, the Supreme Court and numerous executive office buildings within easy walking distance, not to mention all the financial institutions and lobbying firms along K Street.

According to Walk Score, this is the third most walkable neighborhood in Washington, DC, a “Walker’s Paradise” where you don’t need to drive to do errands and a community with a Walk Score of 97 and a Bike Score of 90. The Transit Score is as high as you can possibly get at 100, this having to do with three very close Metrorail stations—Archives-Navy Memorial-Penn Quarter, Judiciary Square and the earlier referenced Gallery Place-Chinatown Station.

But just in case you still want to drive yourself around the city, or to surrounding parts of the Washington Metro region, the Clara Barton has its own parking garage! For more information about Clara Barton and the Lafayette, please call Andre Perez at District Partners at Compass, 202-798-3600.
