Washington, DC is well known for condominiums that are adapted from other prior uses, such as former schools, shipyards or grand hotels. But Citta 50 has one of the most interesting histories of all. The coalhouse in question was designed in the early 1900s by John A. Lankford—DC’s first registered African-American architect. The square three-story brownstone with large factory windows was later abandoned after the 1969 race riots. But around 2006, developer Andrew Economakis and architects Bonstra Haresign began an ambitious adaptive reuse project, which entailed using the original factory as an anchor, with a new five-story structure to the side and a seven-story wing to the rear.
