Chancellery | Historic Condos | Kalorama

Located at 2139 Wyoming Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20008

With its distinguished lineage and exquisite Beaux Arts architecture, the Chancellery is a historic condominium in the heart of Kalorama. Developed by the Simmons Brothers and designed by M.T. Vaughn, the property was delivered in 1912 as the Windsor Lodge. Designated as a historic landmark and featured in James Goode’s “Best Addresses” book, the former apartment complex consists of east and west non-identical wings joined by a connecting passage with windows. There are just 16 prestigious units in all.

The four-story Chancellery has two street addresses, 2139 and 2141 Wyoming Avenue, and sits at the corner of Thorton Place. With its deep setback from the treelined street and fronted by impeccably manicured front lawns, the property looks much like the numerous nearby embassies. However, it is somewhat unique in style as there are different architectural detail for each wing, such as a covered porch for one and a wide projecting balcony for the other. Each half enjoys its own entrance, and there are additional entries as well. Other well-known condominiums and co-ops in the Kalorama neighborhood include 2029 Connecticut, the Dresden, and the Wyoming House.

More About the Chancellery

Prior to its renovation and conversion to luxury condos, the Chancellery was one of DC’s premiere apartment rental communities. With two wings and four stories of living space, the 16 units are often positioned with just two residences at each level. These are very spacious condos, typically ranging from two to three bedrooms and from around 1,870 to nearly 3,000 square feet of elegant living space. That said, there is also a one-bedroom unit with its own street entrance that may once have served as the super’s quarters. The property has been home to esteemed residents over the course of time, including Senator William Edgar Borah from Idaho who lived for many years in a three-bedroom apartment with a huge wood-burning fireplace and towering built-ins. Each unit has its own story to tell, and many have been remodeled by well-known designers and architects. You will typically find full-sized formal dining rooms, glorious wood floors, lovely Old World millwork, fireplaces and other charming reminders of long ago luxury lifestyles mingling seamlessly with today’s more modern conveniences, such as chef-inspired kitchens.

The Chancellery is located in the western part of Kalorama, in an area known as Sheridan-Kalorama. The condominium is a block from Connecticut Avenue, thus giving residents an easy route into next-door Dupont Circle and from there to Downtown DC. Rock Creek is a couple blocks to the west, and the popular Mitchell Park with its summer movie nights is three blocks to the south. Kalorama is a hilly neighborhood that was once part of a 18th century estate known as Belair. The area was subdivided and more widely developed around the early 1900s, aided by the construction of the Taft Bridge and the arrival of a streetcar line. From grand old apartment and condominium buildings to single-family homes belonging to DC’s power brokers, this is one of the most affluent parts of the District. Although chiefly residential in nature, there are plenty of restaurants and other attractions in neighboring Adams Morgan to the north and Dupont Circle to the south.
