More About the Burke Real Estate Market
The community gets its name from Silas Burke, a successful merchant who built a home way back in 1824. That structure still stands as a historically-recognized landmark but it’s not the oldest home in the area. In fact, a four-bedroom farmhouse built in 1790 with wide-plank floors and four fireplaces sold in 2013 for just under $500,000.
For the most part, however, residential development began around the start of the twentieth century and increased over time, continuing into the modern era as more and more subdivisions were added, covering a 12 square-mile area. This makes for a nice variety of styles, including Colonial, Tudor, Victorian farmhouse-style, Cape saltbox and some large contemporary Craftsman-inspired homes.
Prices start around $130,000 for smaller condos for sale and climb to over a million dollars for larger detached single-family residences. Burke Centre is one of the city’s major components with 5852 homes, popular shopping plazas and several community centers with parks, rec facilities and swimming pools. This master-planned community was developed in the late 1970s and hosts events and festivals throughout the year.
Burke has plenty of amenities, including big box retailers, several Starbucks, plenty of popular restaurants and highly-rated public schools. Major roadways like the I-66, Capital Beltway wrap around the perimeter of the suburb, adding to commuter convenience. From luxurious custom homes for sale to entry-level condos, Burke offers one of the best-stocked inventories in Washington Metro.
