The 40,000 square foot building dates back to 1906 and served the community as the Thomas Barbour Bryan Elementary School. But the classic red brick schoolhouse eventually closed down and stood vacant for decades before Abdo Development stepped in. The structure was brought back to its former glory and then some, with 20 spacious lofts that combine original touches with all the new modern bells and whistles. The condominium was delivered in 2004 and is now part of Bryan Square, which also features separate upscale townhouses.

The adaptive reuse of old historic schools in Washington DC has been a hot trend in recent years. Other condominium examples include the Carbery School on Capitol Hill, the Logan School on Capitol Hill and the Parker Flats at Gage School in LeDroit Park.

Among the fascinating original details of this school-turned-condo development are separate “Girl’s and Boy’s” entrances, each with pediments and stone columns. Inside, richly burnished hardwood floors, soaring ceilings, exposed brick walls, lattice-like arrays of exposed overhead beams, and ten-foot windows add to the ambience. The open space residences range from 1,250 to 2,402 square feet, with most of the units including some type of private outdoor space. You can also toss in modern gourmet kitchens with granite counters and stainless steel appliances as well as spa-type baths.Bryan School Lofts condos for sale in Washington DC

Living on the Hill

Capitol Hill is synonymous with the federal government and the corridors of political power. The neighborhood itself is quite large in size, stretching easterly from the actual Capitol building. Bryan Lofts—the historic schoolhouse that is now luxury loft—is located about halfway between the Capitol and the Anacostia River.

This in-between locale happens to be just right! Residents at the Bryan School Lofts can head west on Independence Avenue to the Capitol and its various office buildings which are only about a dozen blocks away. The condos are also adjacent to a confluence of major streets at come together of Lincoln Park. Those include East Capitol Street, Massachusetts Avenue and North Carolina Avenue. These major spokes, as well as 11th, 12th, and 13th Streets, combine to deliver a grid of to-and-from options.

Capitol Hill also lies between two bodies of water that bracket Washington, DC—the Anacostia River and the Potomac River and its parallel Washington Channel. Each waterfront area has been going through a major transition in recent years, with the Navy Yard redevelopment along the Anacostia and The Wharf redevelopment in the Southwest Waterfront, along the Washington Channel. The result is an amazing array of waterfront attractions, with new restaurants, shops, concerts and so much more.

What all this means is an endless number of places to see and things to do. You can catch a Washington Nationals baseball game at Nationals Park in the Navy Yard; a DC United soccer game at Audi Field or head over for some history and culture at the numerous national museums along the National Mall. Or perhaps you just want to relax on the grass at Lincoln Park or browse all the different vendors, art exhibits, farmers markets and restaurants at the Eastern Market—the District’s historic marketplace, on Capitol Hill since 1873!
