About the Brookland Neighborhood
Like many communities in Washington Metro, Brookland has a rich history, dating back to early land grants and homes Fort Slemmer and Fort Bunker Hill during the Civil War. The arrival of streetcars and the founding of the Catholic University of America in 1887 spurred further growth.
The neighborhood got its name from a 19th century farm, the Brooks Estate, that was purchased and platted for residential development.
Brookland hit a bit of a rough patch from the 1970s through to the 1990s, but has gone through a revitalization period since then. A restaurant and retail spine along 12th Street has been an integral part the community’s reemergence.
Among the popular eateries in the neighborhood are Brookland’s Finest Bar & Kitchen, Brookland Pint, Smith Public Trust and Bespoke Kitchen—a tiny New American chef’s kitchen within Eat and Smile Catering.
