Brightwood Real Estate, Washington DC
Tucked into Rock Creek Park in the northwestern part of Washington, DC is Brightwood, a quiet community that is no longer a best kept secret. Homes for sale here have skyrocketed in value, climbing over 20 percent in the last 12 months and a similar amount the previous 12 months. In other words, those awesome dollhouse Victorians and porch-front row houses that your friends told you about still exist but they cost more now.
With a population of about 11,000, this old neighborhood, often lumped in with the adjacent Brightwood Park community, is located north of Petworth and 16th Street Heights and shares commonality in terms of both architecture and community vibes. Settled by free African Americans in the 1820s, the neighborhood is also home to Fort Stevens which was built to protect the city. During the Civil War, President Lincoln came under attack at the fort. The partially restored fortification lies inside Rock Creek Park and is a popular tourist attraction.

Brightwood Neighborhood Information
Brightwood went through a new period of growth and development beginning in the early 1920s and the architecture is reflective of that period. Homes for sale are typified by American Foursquare, late Victorian, Side Hall Colonials, Sears Roebuck catalog homes (often referred to generically as Craftsman) and post-World War II Capes and cottages. Condos for sale include two-story row houses, often with Mansard roofs, converted Art Deco apartment buildings and some large 1960s-era structures designed in the International style.
Sometimes referred to as a “boomlet” due to a more subtle transitioning than high-density urban areas to the south, Brightwood still has a quirky and diverse sense of small town charm. Local businesses include the Chocolate Crust bakery and coffee, the Simple Bar & Grill, Wapa Café and Second Wind Crossfit. As for Brightwood real estate prices, homes and condos for sale start around $150,000 and climb to about $900,000. Despite the recent sticker shock at the higher levels, however, there is still a nice inventory of properties in the mid-to-high six figure range.
