Where is Brightwood?
The neighborhood is nestled into Rock Creek Park, and is north of Petworth and 16th Street Heights. Brightwood is also associated with its adjacent sister community, Brightwood Park. This area is considered to be in the Northeast quadrant of the District.
The Community’s History
Brightwood was settled in the 1820s by free African-Americans. The community was called Vinegar Hill at the time, located near the intersection of what is now Georgia and Missouri Avenues. Later, during the lead-up to the Civil War, Fort Stevens was built at Vinegar Hill. On July 12, 1864, President Lincoln himself came under attack by Confederate soldiers while observing the Civil War fighting. Over 900 lives from both sides were lost.
Home Styles in Brightwood
While there are a few structures left dating back to the earliest days, widespread residential development didn’t occur until the 1920s, slowing down by the 1940s but continuing at a slower pace thereafter.
Single-family home styles include American Foursquare, Victorian, Craftsman and Cape Cods. There are also row houses in various designs, including porch-front buildings with Mansard roofs. Many of the row houses as well as Art Deco and other boxy low-rise apartment buildings have converted to condos for sale in recent years.
A Gradual Evolvement
Brightwood and Brightwood Park have collectively been referred to as a “boomlet” area—that due to the gradual transition of a place that still has a quirky small-town feel. Local bars and restaurants include the Wapa Café Boutique, the Anxo Cidery & Tasting Room and the Simple Bar & Grill.
