Ballston Homes For Sale
Ballston may be one of Arlington, Virginia’s oldest neighborhoods, but these days, the real estate market is all about upscale condos and townhouses for sale. As one of the two bookends of the red-hot Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor, it is also a place synonymous with great bars, restaurants, entertainment and shopping. This popular neighborhood of some 12,319 residents wasn’t always a trendy urban territory, however.
The community was originally known as Ball’s Crossing, named after the influential Ball family who was among the original Virginia colonists. Mary Ball Washington was the mother of George Washington. The crossroads which is now represented by the intersection of N. Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard dates back to 1740.

Similar to its neighbors Ashton Heights and Bluemont, Ballston was primarily a farming community until the early 1900’s. But residential development picked up quickly around the turn of the 20th century, aided by the presence of nearby railroads and streetcars. Early home styles included Colonial Revival, Victorian and Craftsman. And while condos for sale are now the predominant housing stock in Ballston, some of these original historic properties still come on the market here and there.
Another important part of the landscape was Ballston’s emergence as a retail hub. The Parkington Shopping Center opened to march fanfare in 1951, ushering in a new shopping and business era. But eventually, a level of urban decay set in. That all changed when Arlington County accepted the Ballston Sector Plan in 1980. That led to the opening of Ballston Common Mall in 1986. The mall is currently undergoing a major renovation and will soon be known as Ballston Center.
The other major part of the puzzle has been the area’s emergence as prime territory for luxury condos, lofts and townhouses for sale, along with mixed-use buildings and plenty of standalone shops and restaurants that are apart from the mall.
Among the many popular condominium developments in the community are Ballston 880, Ballston Green and Ballston Park. The area is also known for its colleges, including Marymount University and George Washington University. And if city homes, colleges, bars, restaurants and shopping aren’t enough, there’s also convenient transportation at the Ballston-MU Metro Station.
