Styles of Single-Family Homes in Arlington
Arlington—both the city and the county—is loaded with history and that means a bumper crop of antique structures. Older traditional styles of architecture include Colonial, Victorian, Craftsman and English Tudor. Cape Cod-style homes started coming into vogue around the 1940s, and many of the older styles have continued to retain their popularity with newer construction favoring traditional influences.
The Mid-Century Modern form cropped up around the late 1940s, continuing to around 1970. These homes typically favor low-slung profiles, flat or gently sloping roofs, wide overhangs, giant glass windows and other stylized features. The same era also produced Ramblers and Split-Levels—family-friendly homes for the baby boomer generation. The generalized Contemporary style soon followed.
There’s plenty of other styles as well, including large and expensive Arts & Crafts, French Country, Georgian Revival, Mediterranean and more.
But despite the many types of design, it is the Colonial that is most closely associated with Arlington. Even so, that prolific style has many offshoots, with Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial, Custom Colonial, and varied facades such as brick, clapboard and stone.
