Arlington Oaks Condos For Sale, Arlington VALocated at 4490 North Pershing Drive Arlington, VA 22203
Arlington Oaks is a condominium community with a long and interesting history. Condos for sale at Arlington Oaks are certainly worthy all on their own—but the story behind them adds to the flavor. The tip of the iceberg is the present day complex—seven elongated two-story structures, built in the Colonial Revival style, and interwoven with grassy courtyards.
This neighborhood, which is immediately north of Arlington Blvd and south of Wilson, was once part of a massive colonial era estate. In the 1930s, however, a New York industrialist named Allie Freed, set about creating Buckingham—a forward thinking experiment with the goal of providing better housing for middle-class renters. The long-range plan included the eventual conversion of rental units to condos for sale—this during a time when condos weren’t on anybody’s radar.

More About Condominiums For Sale in Arlington Oaks
Freed and his wife toured Europe for design inspiration, and came up with a plan for a series of buildings with abundant greenspace between them. The first units were delivered to great fanfare in 1937. By the early 1940s, the development represented a city of 8,000 residents, with 183 brick garden-style apartment buildings, housing 1817 individual units. At the time, Buckingham was the largest garden apartment community in the entire country!
The president day neighborhood is now part of a historic district, and generally referred to as Buckingham Village, with its original center at the corner of N. Glebe and N. Pershing. The Arlington Oaks condos—which are three blocks from the center—went through a major renovation in 1992. You’ll find numerous other brick buildings in the area from Freed’s experimental “city”, many of which are similar condo communities.
What can buyers expect to get at Arlington Oaks? Like many other garden apartment conversions, these units offer a number of floor plans, including one-bedroom, two-bedroom, two-bedroom with den, and two-story townhouses with three bedrooms. Residents have a bikeshare station on the corner, and can walk to restaurants and the Ballston Metro. Plus, one of the courtyards was recently turned into a dog park!
