The area north of Route 50 in Virginia’s popular Arlington County is often referred to as North Arlington. Extending west from the Potomac River, this is a commuter-friendly region with a number of very affluent neighborhoods. And that means some very luxurious homes and condos for sale. But real estate buyers looking for bargains needn’t despair—there are still great deals to be had, even with prices climbing steadily.

Arlington in general dates back to the earliest colonial settlers and the northern portion is no exception. Still, this is a varied community with dozens of individual neighborhoods from large to small and from old to not-so-old. Properties are fairly evenly divided between multifamily dwellings and detached single-family homes, depending on the community—rural or urban. You’ll find large concentrations of condos and townhouses for sale in high-density neighborhoods like Ballston and Clarendon-Courthouse where the construction cranes roam and popular bars and restaurants compete for customers and favorable Yelp reviews.

And then there’s the upscale suburbanized neighborhoods where homes for sale can range from cute Craftsman cottages to massive Colonial mansions—either historic or new custom affairs. Of course, home styles can also be somewhat location specific, especially in case of concentrated periods of development and builders who favored one style over another. 

As for prices, condos for sale generally start out around $150,000 and climb into seven figure territory for luxury lofts, penthouses and multistory townhomes. Detached single-family homes for sale tend to list higher in North Arlington than the southern part of the county and general, start off around $500,000 and climb well into the millions.

If you’re interested in buying a home in North Arlington it’s best to investigate by neighborhood given the array of choices. Do you like lots of surrounding green space or are urban corridors your thing? Do you absolutely need a Whole Foods within a certain radius and what about nearby Metro stations? Get ready to do some digging because there’s a wealth of great homes for sale in the region.
