Living in Dupont Circle

Dupont Circle is a quintessential Washington, DC neighborhood—historic, urban, diverse, upscale, lively and very desirable. The location could not be more ideal, bordered by affluent Kalorama to the north, trendy Logan Circle to the east, exciting Downtown to the south and ritzy Georgetown to the west. But it is Dupont Circle that is quite literally the hub to all of its neighbors, anchored by a famous traffic circle and its inner park, from which major avenues radiate like the spokes of a wheel.

The land that the Dupont Circle neighborhood dates back to the earliest inception of Washington, and even before, actually. But it was mostly farms and scattered estates in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. A syndicate of wealthy businessmen and politicians purchased much of the land in the area in the 1860s and in 1871, the U.S. Corp of Engineers set about building the traffic circle, then known as Pacific Circle and later rechristened Dupont Circle in honor of Rear Admiral Samuel Francis Dupont. It was at this point that residential development kicked into a higher gear.

Grand mansions once lined Connecticut, New Hampshire and Massachusetts Avenues, those being the wide diagonal spokes intersecting the circle. Row houses and apartment buildings in the Queen Anne, Second Empire and Richardsonian Romanesque style, including many from prolific developer Harry Wardman, were constructed along the grid of north-south and east-west streets, such as 17th, 18th, 19th and Q, R and S streets. Years later, and before the Dupont Circle Historic District was created, many of the biggest single-family homes were razed for redevelopment. Today, a great many antique row houses, former hotels and apartments, and to a lesser degree, palatial mansions, are still standing. There are also newer condominium buildings and lots of examples of innovative reuse developments—a case in point being 1745N with its combination of old and new. Whether you are a lover of row houses in general, or prefer modern flats, this is your address!

As mentioned earlier, Dupont Circle is known for its many great bars and restaurants, as well as boutique shops, small galleries, yoga studios and other neighborhood friendly attractions. There’s always something to do or see, and the dining choices are simply staggering.
