Leeway Heights in Arlington, Virginia is not the same as Lee Heights but it is in the same general area—about a half-mile southwest in fact, and south of Lee Highway. The smallish community is more closely associated with its next-door neighbor to the east, Tara. Together, they are typically referred to as Tara-Leeway Heights, and share the same civic organization.
There’s about 600 properties in the combined community, roughly 350 in Leeway Heights and less than 250 in Tara. The area is bordered by 22nd Street N to the north, N. George Mason Drive to the east, 15th Street N. to the south and both N. Lexington and N. Jefferson Streets to the west. Other surrounding neighborhoods include Waycroft-Woodlawn, Lacey Forest, Westover and Garden City.

Residential development began in the mid-1930s in Leeway Heights (and in Tara) and was primarily completed by the mid-1950s. Homes for sale tend toward detached single-family properties with architectural types including a Colonial Revival, farmhouse-style, Craftsman, Cape Cods and brick Ramblers. A small enclave of upscale townhouses known as Tara Towne Townhomes was also built in 1979. Most recently, there has been a trend toward extensive renovations or complete teardowns, often resulting in “New Craftsman” style homes—larger and fancier versions of those old gabled bungalows with wide overhangs and front porches.
Locals in Tara-Leeway Heights enjoy dining and shopping at the eclectic Lee Heights Shops on Lee Highway. The fun little shopping center with its bright awnings offers businesses such as the Upper Crust Pizzeria, Crisp & Juicy, Pastries by Randolph, Lemonchello Boutique, Child’s Play Toys and more. The community is also involved with the local arts scene, with the Arlington Artists Alliance headquartered in Cassett’s Café.
Homes for sale in Tara-Leeway Heights have recently listed from around $650,000 to $1.3 million. Due to the popularity of the neighborhood and the general housing crunch in Washington Metro, active listings can be scarce and usually sell fast.
