More about the Neighborhood
This is one of DC’s oldest neighborhoods, dating to the early 1800s. But there was a need for more federal office buildings as the government expanded, as well as a highway to get into the center of the city. As a result, many of the old historic homes were torn down. These days, you’ll find an urban mix of architecture from old brownstones to gleaming glass and steel towers.
Admittedly, many of the buildings in this neighborhood are dedicated to the work of the government and judiciary. But among the handful of residential structures is the popular 400 Massachusetts Avenue—a 13-story high-rise with 259 luxury condos as well as street-level retail, including Sixth Engine, a contemporary American restaurant at the site of DC’s first firehouse.
