Penthouses have long represented a certain big city ideal, and that is certainly true in Washington, DC as well as other parts of the DC Metro area such as Arlington, Virginia and Bethesda, Maryland. The sky-high luxury residences are found at the upper levels of buildings, and often include private outdoor spaces that provide the perfect place to lounge and take in the surrounding cityscapes below. These elite abodes come at a cost, and indeed, each of our showcase penthouse condos for sale in October have a list price in access of a million dollars.

Our spotlight journey begins in Washington’s super trendy U Street Corridor, with Unit #PH03 at the 2020 Lofts building. Listed at $1,325,000, this two-story penthouse has three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 1,832 square feet of living space and new wide-plank flooring throughout. The main level has an open layout, oversized windows, exposed ductwork, a gas fireplace and a sleek gourmet kitchen with Viking appliances and quartz counters. Two owner’s suites plus a third bedroom are on this level, with floating spiral stairs leading up to a super cool den and a private rooftop terrace overlooking the city. The vibrant neighborhood is also a plus, with nearby restaurants, revitalized theaters and music venues, and a Whole Foods Market, all within easy strolling distance. And while the apartment comes with secure underground parking, you’ll also be close to the U Street Metro Station.

While penthouses usually conjure up images of high-rise buildings, it is not always the case. Take for instance, Unit #5 at 1746 Q Street NW, Washington, DC. This residence occupies the top two floors in a stately Dupont Circle row house with a stone façade. Originally built in 1890, this early Grande Dame structure was more recently made over by M.H. Holahan Development into five luxury condos for sale. The penthouse unit is listed at $1,595,000, and comes with three bedrooms, 2.5 baths, beautiful new wide-plank white oak floors and a spacious main living area that includes a dramatic front bay and an open chef’s kitchen with recessed appliances and white stone counters. You can enjoy meals out on a stunning private terrace. There is also a balcony on the upper level. The location is also prime, just steps from all the famed Dupont restaurants, as well as the iconic circle itself.

Heading north, we find Unit #602 at The Lauren in Bethesda, Maryland. Listed at $2,999,999, this 3,223 square foot penthouse offers three bedrooms, 3.5 baths, and a private elevator that opens into a marble foyer. Dark gray hardwood floors run throughout the residence. There’s also dramatic cove ceilings, a marble gas fireplace, a formal dining room, a large open main living area and a gourmet kitchen with thick slab marble counters, Wolf and Sub-Zero stainless steel appliances and a built-in wine refrigerator. Enjoy meals out on one of the multiple private terraces! The contemporary marble bathrooms are quite stunning, and a large walk-in laundry room includes side-by-side front-loading washer and dryer, a sink and cabinets. The Lauren offers white glove service and is located right by Bethesda Row with its upscale shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Across the river in Arlington’s Virginia Square neighborhood is where you’ll find our final spotlight penthouse of the month. Unit #611 is on the top floor of ARC 3409, and is listed at $1,049,000. The two-bedroom, two-bath residence looks a lot more spacious than its 1,510 square feet would indicate. Perhaps that is due to the wide-open main living area with its walls of uninterrupted floor-to-ceiling windows. The two enormous balconies totaling 500 square feet also add a very nice touch. Other features include an upgraded open kitchen, built-in entertainment centers and California Closets. The Arc 3409 building has a very distinctive look, juxtaposing curvilinear and rectangular portions. The location is also key, along the highly popular Rosslyn-Ballston Corridor and just two blocks from the Virginia Square-GMU Metro.
