Luxury homes for sale come in many sizes and styles in the Washington Metro area. The region includes the District of Columbia, Northern Virginia and parts of Maryland, and is sometimes cheekily referred to as “the DMV.” It’s a place where densely populated urban neighborhoods comingle with quiet suburbs, all within a conveniently commutable distance. For our October spotlight on fancy properties, we have selected an intriguing variety, ranging from a 10,450 square foot mansion on an acre of lush green land in McLean to a revamped 3.325 square foot Washington, DC townhouse originally built in 1885.

It is not that often that detached single-family homes for sale pop up in the heart of Kalorama. The exclusive Washington, DC enclave is better known for its grand old apartment buildings, cooperatives, condos, townhouses and embassies. But 33 Kalorama Circle truly is that rare creature, a beautifully maintained Norman Revival stone house built in 1927, sitting on a double lot. Listed at $4,395,000, the three-story home with its original slate roof offers nine bedrooms, 5.5 baths, 5,050 square feet of living space and a first level garage. The grounds are something out of a picture book, with lush lawns and landscaping, gardens, patios and terraces, while the interior combines countless priceless architectural details blended with tasteful updates like the Chef’s kitchen. Kalorama translates into “beautiful view” in Greek, and this particular part of the community is known as Kalorama Heights for its lofty position.

The sprawling estate at 911 Centrillion Drive in McLean, Virginia, represents the largest home in our October collection, although not the most expensive. Priced at $3,475,000, the 10,450 square foot Regency model occupies over an acre of land in The Reserve, a gated community with around the clock security staff. This is one of the most exclusive places to live in the Washington area and this particular home with its seven bedrooms, nine full baths and two half-baths, is about as fancy as you get. The resort-style setting includes a giant swimming pool, spa, bath house, patios and gazebos, manicured lawns, a movie theater, billiards room with bar, a game room, a full state of the art fitness center and a sauna. One might also point out things like the magnificent twin grand staircases flanking a three-story glass window bay overlooking a waterfall, or the million dollars spent in improvements. It really is that posh.

Those desiring a home by the river might wish to consider the Tuscan-inspired Villa at 11516 Luvie Court in Potomac, Maryland. Listed at $2,395,000 and designed by Robert McAlpine, the 7,945 square foot home with six bedrooms, six full baths and two half-baths, sits on a landscaped 1.6 acre lot that is surrounded by trees and nestled within the highly desirable Merry-Go-Round Farm community with its spectacular river views, horse farm, tennis courts, three private lakes and nine miles of walking trails. Doesn’t that sound nice? The house with its sophisticated arches, incredible millwork and soaring ceilings includes a gorgeous mahogany sun room, a home movie theater, a fitness center, radiant heated floors throughout all three levels, a lovely country kitchen, multiple stone patios and terraces, a wisteria-trellised courtyard, English gardens and a heated salt-water swimming pool. There’s plenty of huge bedrooms with lavish en-suite baths, plus a formal dining room, a family room, a sitting room, an office, a three-car garage and a workshop. We may be leaving a few of the details out!

Our final entry is an award-winning transformation of a Dupont Circle row house originally built in 1885. Located at 1738 Corcoran Street NW, this four-story gem blends original vintage charm with stunning new modernity, resulting in a showcase townhouse in the very heart of the city. Priced at $2,149,000, the home has four bedrooms, 3.5 baths, 3,325 square feet of living space plus a private outdoor terrace. Industrial-chic steel stairs connect all four levels. There are concrete floors throughout, exposed white brick walls and a lower level recreation room, bedroom suite with full bath and an office. Fascinating sliding barn doors can be found throughout the home, including that leads to a pantry in an extraordinarily cool kitchen that seems straight out of a coffee table book. Similarly, the bathrooms present a level of style that is difficult to do justice to with mere words. The location is also notable, just a few blocks from the famed circle park with the fountain in the middle and one mile from the White House. The number of top Dupont Circle restaurants within easy strolling distance is simply staggering.
